Family Sponsorship

There are many situations where one member of a family becomes a Canadian citizen and/or permanent resident and wishes to bring other members of his or her family to Canada . Family Class Immigration is available through a type of sponsorship arrangement. Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Canada who are 18 years of age or older, are permitted to sponsor close relatives or family members to become permanent residents of Canada . However, sponsors are required to promise to support the relative or family member(s) to help them settle in Canada . This period could range from three to ten years.

Relatives and family members eligible for sponsorship include:

  • Spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older;
  • Parents and grandparents;
  • Dependent children;
  • Children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt;
  • Orphaned and unmarried brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren under the age of 18.
